So you think you want to be an entrepreneur?

February 24, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Now that you have a business idea or you are thinking of taking a nascent startup to the next level, it may be time to take a hard look at what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

Please join us as we delve into the many considerations behind this decision. You’ll hear from small business owner and speaker Otis Jennings, Mark Golden, CEO of Golden Artist Colors, Inc., and Brad Treat & Ken Rother, Entrepreneurs-in-Residence from the Southern Tier Startup Alliance. We will present some of the leading thinking in the literature, hear personal stories, and engage in informal discussion with current and potential entrepreneurs. The goal of the session is for participants to leave with specific actions they can take to make an informed decision.

There will be three available presentations: for families interested in school- and home-based projects supporting early literacy, for teen entrepreneurs, and for adult entrepreneurs ready to take next steps. Choose specific sessions, or stay for the whole evening.

Session #1, 6:00-6:45 pm: Innovative Early Literacy Strategies, presented by Jeanne Marshman and Anita Sitarski (in the Oxford Academy Primary School Multipurpose Room)

Please join us as a team of Oxford Academy Educators present innovative strategies designed to promote literacy at the foundational level, including development and delivery of “The Blackhawk Box.” This session is a must for any parent or educator who wants to be actively involved in an exciting regional initiative, or for anyone who wants to learn specific strategies to help young students make the most of their early school experiences. Participants will be invited to share feedback and their own ideas for improving literacy. Your input matters.

Session #2, 6:00-6:45 pm: Practical Skills for the Teen Entrepreneur: How to Create Your Path to Success in School, Work, and Beyond, presented by Dominick Recckio (in the Oxford Academy Primary School Multipurpose Room)

Are you a middle or high school student who has great ideas and enjoys working with others? This session will be led by college student entrepreneur Dominick Recckio who will share his thoughts on how youth can create an outlet for their creative ideas, whether about making their school or community better or a potential business proposal. Dominick will draw on his personal experiences in developing ideas and initiatives.  This isn’t a lecture; you are invited to participate in a group conversation as well as propose ideas for Dominick’s feedback.

Session #3. 7:00-8:30 pm: So You Think You Want to Be an Entrepreneur? presented by Brad Treat, Ken Rother, and Mark Golden, with host Otis Jennings (in the Oxford Academy High School Auditorium)
